Steve_Savitzky / Tracks

[..] [files]

If you're seeing this on the website, don't expect too much. This file is basically just a placeholder until I cook up a proper index.html file for the directory. On the other hand, if you're browsing the directory tree, you already know that I put a HEADER.html file into every directory to aid in navigation.

A ``track'', represented by a subdirectory in this directory, is one recorded (or at least recordable) version of a song. A track will normally have the same filename (shortname) as the corresponding song file, possibly with a suffix to distinguish it from other tracks of the same song -- I haven't figured that part out yet.

Inside the firewall, each track directory contains one or more Audacity projects, with basenames take1, take2, etc. Tracks intended for publication should be exported as .wav files; makefiles will then be used to generate .ogg files for use on the web. Metadata is obtained from the .flk files in ../Songs/.

Annotated Contents

Each track gets its own sub-directory; the directory name is the base filename of the corresponding song in ../Songs/. Still not entirely clear how to deal with songs that will eventually have multiple published tracks -- the simplest is probably to make a subdirectory of the track directory for each different version, but it may be better to just have separate projects ("takes") in the one track directory, which is essentially what we do now.

Every track directory should contain a file called "notes" -- the last line that starts in column 1 will be listed by list-tracks. Every track directory that can be considered at least demo quality should have a file in it called OK; it can contain a very brief (7 characters or less) hint about what work still needs to be done. The make template for albums normally uses the most recent .wav file in each track directory.

Some uploaded track directories may have a .git subdirectory; this is a repository for the git version control system. In general, it's going to be faster (by 30-50%) to pull an audacity project out of version control than to download it directly.
